Understanding Microdermabrasion Crystals And Their Use

By Dawn Williams

Throughout the lifetime of a person, skin has the ability to rejuvenate on its own. Skin cells die and are replaced with new cells. As people age, this process begins to slow down. Dead skin cells build up on the surface of the skin instead of shedding off. This build up causes wrinkles to be more visible, the skin to appear dull, and the pores to get blocked. For these issues, microdermabrasion crystals can be used to help get rid of the skin cell build up.

The skin treatment is usually performed in a salon or cosmetic treatment facility. A technician uses a type of vacuum machine to remove anything sitting on the skin. This suction also helps to stimulate blood flow to the area and encourage draining of the lymph nodes. Through the increase in circulation, skin cells are able to multiply much faster because the blood flow has increased.

When the skin has been suctioned, the next step is to blast the crystal material onto the surface of the skin. This is where multiple machines may be used, or one machine that handles it all can be used as well. The high rate blast of material removes the dead cells that are left after the skin has been suctioned. Crystal materials can be made from different things, including a baking soda mixture or aluminum oxide.

Once the material has been blown at the skin, the technician will suction the skin surface again. The material and dead skin cells are removed. In most cases, the result is usually smoother and younger looking skin. Pores are open after the procedure, allowing the skin to get more oxygen and appear healthier.

One of the main reasons people choose this type of cosmetic procedure is because it does not involve surgery. The risks are much lower than with surgery or other procedures. Also, the recovery time is much shorter, if there is any recovery at all. Surgery is one other option for removing skin surface issues that are deeper in the skin layers, but it may not always be necessary.

Wrinkle reduction is one common issue that can benefit from this procedure. Scars from acne may also appear to be reduced. More problematic conditions, such as scarring from eczema or skin cancer, generally do not respond well because they tend to occur deeper in the skin layers.

There are a few disadvantages to this type of procedure. Skin spotting can occur, resulting in dark or light spots appearing. Typically peeling, flaking, and redness may occur as the skin works to replace old cells with new ones. The mild irritation that causes the redness is a common side effect.

For most people, multiple sessions with the microdermabrasion crystals will be necessary, particularly for more pronounced wrinkles and dullness. It is generally recommended for sessions to be spaced with a few weeks in between to allow for proper healing. People who have this procedure are advised to avoid direct sunlight and any make up or chemicals that may add to irritation for a few days following the procedure.
