Simple Facts About Dietary Supplements

By Andy G Smith

The world of dietary supplements can be hard to navigate, especially if you have very little education on diet, but also want to do the most you can to improve your long-term good health. Here are some guidelines to ponder prior to picking vitamin and mineral supplements:

antioxidants and Minerals - The role of anti-oxidants in the body is to support healthy immune functions and to neutralise damaging free radicals. Free radicals are generated as a waste product from chemical processes within the body (specifically respiration and digestion) and are very volatile particles, which attack human cells. Over prelonged periods of time, constant attacking of our cells by free radicals can initiate the development of degenerative diseases and conditions. Therefore, an advanced consumption of vitamins and minerals can help to reduce free radical damage and help in the fight against degenerative disease.

In addition, your lifestyle may play a significant role in determining what amounts of vitamins and minerals you need on a day-to-day basis. For example, if you smoke your needs could be increased. Also, did you know that if you train consistently, at increased heart rates, then your needs is also increased? This is due to the fact that vitamins (AKA antioxidants) are required to neutralise the harmful waste products created as we use oxygen. Heavy exercise increases oxygen usage and therefore, raises potentially volatile by-products known as free radicals.

A further worthwhile consideration is the quality of the product. As nutritional supplements only need to be produced to food standards to satisfy industry requirements, it is relatively hard for manufacturers to regulate exactly what is put in to their nutritionals. Products might become contaminated, or might not have the same ingredients in every individual tablet and we ideally need consistency!

As a former health and fitness professional I am of the opinion that it is more sensible to provide our bodies with a surplus, as long as the amounts we intake are not in toxic ranges. By providing our body with surplus, it can utilise as much as it needs and reject what is left over. Vitamins and minerals that are not used are excreted and so will not adversely affect our health. Some nutritional supplements manufacturers produce products to pharmaceutical standards, so they have greater control of the makeup of each tablet. This also dramatically reduces the chance of contamination with harmful, or prohibited substances. With this noted, I also suggest using products that are manufactured to a pharmaceutical standard.

To summarise, you are better selecting pharmaceutical grade nutritionals, which provide advanced levels of micro-nutrients.
